Farm News

In hopes that it does rain this week, Ben spent the entire weekend seeding cover crop. First he prepared the fields that we don’t have crops on with our perfecta, a field cultivation implement that is new to us this year. It was so dusty and dry but the job got done and Ben looked like Pigpen at the end. That was all of Saturday. On Sunday Ben seeded 1000 pounds of oats with about 200 lbs clover seed mixed in on all of the fields. Lastly he ran back over with the perfecta to lightly cover the seeds. If it doesn’t end up raining or just rains a little, the covered seed will stand a better chance of germinating then if left uncovered (we’ve learned that the hard way). I’m typing this on Sunday at 7 and he is still out there. All in all just about 10 acres are getting this cover crop treatment! Fingers crossed we do get the rain they are predicting this week(Sunday’s wasn’t even enough to keep the dust down!). The oat stand will establish this fall with the goal of suppressing weed seeds (we have a thistle problem we need to manage) and prevent soil erosion in the winter. This was our last chance to seed oats before it gets too late in the season, so even though it meant Ben didn’t have a restful, relaxing, or frankly fun weekend (tractor work is hard on the body!), it was an imperative job. Hopefully in next week’s blog I’ll be able to post a picture of our germinated oat fields!

Time to cover the seed, this time field B3 is pictured. A slightly smaller dust cloud follows behind after a few sprinkles of rain.
