CSA Extended Season~ Week 1

This Week’s Harvest

Broccoli absolutely loving the dry weather

Farm News

Last week was a week off our regular weekly harvest which enabled us to focus on important fall tasks of bulk harvesting carrots, planting garlic, and prepping fields for next season. I’m not going to lie, it has been nice doing all these tasks with warm sunny weather! We did have to irrigate to harvest the carrots- a step that has become common in our harvests of produce under the ground. It is back to being dry- some of the items in this week’s box couldn’t go out during the regular season because of the dry weather. Usually super fast growing turnips, radishes and arugula make an appearance in the regular season but it was hard to get them established and growing well during the drought. I do have a theory that produce tastes better when it is dry so enjoy the extra flavorful produce!

Making pretty turnip bunches in the sun

Here’s hoping we have better luck with garlic next year! We started with fresh organic seed from Pete’s Greens, a certified organic CSA farm in Vermont.
This picture was taken last October 30. This year we haven’t had to cover any crops with freeze protecting row cover.
