Recently we announced on social media that we are no longer running a CSA. This coupled with the fact that we stopped going to market a few years ago means that we are slowing operations waaaaaaay down. We have loved growing your vegetables for nearly 20 years! Dayton has served us very well. It is neat to think about how we’ve been able to grow the business thanks to our customers! I love thinking about all the kids that have grown up eating our vegetables :-)!
A few years ago Ben took an off farm job with Midwest Organic Services Association, an organic certification agency. For these past three years he has effectively worked 2 full time jobs, working nights and weekends on the farm. When considering the next 20 years of our lives, this year seems like a perfect time to scale back. I have been actively looking, applying and interviewing for my next adventure since September and am so very excited to announce that I have been offered and accepted a position at Aullwood Audubon! I will take my experience running the farm to be the center’s new Operations Manager. I am thrilled I get to work for a national conservation organization at a local nature center that has meant so much to me since moving to the area!
We will continue to steward the land here at Mile Creek and have ideas for long term cover cropping to help with the health of the land as well as the weed pressure from thistle mainly which has intensified the past couple of years. I am also super excited to announce that there will still be Mile Creek vegetables available for purchase next season!! Our son Evan has enjoyed the past 2 summers earning a paycheck from the farm and wants to run a market garden next summer. I will share more details as we finalize plans but it will most likely be a self service situation from our red barn front room cooler with mainly summer crops that are easy for Evan to manage on his own with help from us in our free time- sweet corn, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet peppers, zucchini, melons, garlic and more. We hope our farm pick up members will be able to visit frequently and our members more spread out will be able to come from time to time! Follow Mile Creek Farm on socail media if you don’t already, as I will update with details about his farm stand.
We had a dream and vision 20 years ago and feel we have accomplished our goal of feeding as many families as we could nutritious food all while stewarding a 30 acre piece of Montgomery County land. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support! And if you are ever looking for a good place to hike, I know a place ;-)—and would love to see you!
