Farm News

Yes, it is still raining and yes, the seedlings I was so excited to plant last week have had a rough first week in the field, but I am not going to discuss the weather today! Instead I will talk about something cheery– our first successful year with a new-for- us flower, Lisianthus. A rose like flower, it is well know in the flower farming world as it is gorgeous, super long lasting, and far superior when purchased locally, as it does not ship well.

We grow it in our hoop house, which is very important for a successful crop. I harvested the first stems for market last week and they flew off the shelves! We will be bringing more to market for about a month. I’m growing purple, pink, and yellow blooms this year in one bed in the hoophouse.  There are some flower farmers who have entire hoophouse devoted to Lisianthus. I’m so excited about it, perhaps that will be Mile Creek Farm some year!

 Recipes

Beet Pancakes

Sweet and Spicy Green Beans (Use sweet onion in place of shallot. Use 1 jalapeño pepper, ribs and seeds removed in place of dried red chilies)

Swiss Chard and Zucchini Enchiladas

We made a simple and delicious salsa without any herbs. Throw into food processor: 1/4 of a sweet onion roughly chopped, 1 jalapeño ribs and seeds removed and chopped, 1 large tomato or 2 medium tomatoes roughly chopped, Juice from half a lemon, salt to taste and a little bit of oil. Pulse process just a few times so salsa still has some chunks.
