Farm News
Even though school is starting back up and it is getting dark earlier, we are still in the midst of the busy season where all aspects of the farm are underway. We are still seeding, planting, harvesting, weeding, side dressing plants with compost and doing other plant maintenance.
Yesterday we hustled during the CSA harvest so that we’d have time for planting in the afternoon. We had to plant the final round of broccoli, bok choi, spinach, broccoli raab and mustard greens. The seedlings looked great and the timing for planting was perfect. We kept checking radar and the weather and it seemed like we’d get the planting done. We only needed 3 hours after all. But 2 hours in, the sky opened up and dumped rain on us. The crew jumped ship and ran to the barn (me included) and Ben had to drive as fast as a tractor can drive back to the machine shed. Then he went back out to rescue the flats we hadn’t gotten to yet. 20 minutes later it cleared up but the damage was done and we were out of the field for the day. Fortunately 2 of our crew could work again today to finish the job. We are grateful for our crew’s flexibility and hard work to get all our tasks done! 24 hours later it’s as if the surprise storm hadn’t even happened.
