Farm News
This weekend we were kept busy with the first frosts and freezes of the fall season. We picked all the bell peppers of good size, harvested this week’s fennel and radishes, and covered more sensitive crops with row cover.
If we still had tomatoes, we would have been in for a longer night. As I’ve mentioned before, this year’s rainy period prevented us from being able to plant our final rounds of field tomatoes. Consequently, the frost’s arrival didn’t come with a daunting to do list and we approached Saturday evening more relaxed than year’s past.
We were even able to involve the kids. We want them to be connected to the farm and understand what it is their parents do, but when we work with them we can’t have efficiency on our minds. Everything takes a lot longer with them and this can often be a problem as vegetable farms run on efficency. We didn’t have to hurry to haul in the beauty heart radishes so Evan and Isla actually harvested them for us, all while having a great time!
