final planting of tomatoes done for the year
a room in our barn is full of sweet potatoes

Frost came early this year! Fortunately we got the sweet potatoes all harvested and had time to run through the peppers and tomatoes one more time. Unfortunately it is so dry, we are having to water during the day and tow the sprinkler back in at night to keep little parts from freezing and breaking. I always say every year is so different weather wise and how I’m surprised at how many weather iterations there can possibly be. This fall is no different being the coldest AND driest I can remember. The dryness is alright and it suppresses disease. Because of this we had a great crop of cauliflower for 2 weeks of CSA and 3 weeks of market off of one planting. Last year it was so warm it the planting came ready all at once and a lot went past given the tiny harvest window. I also think the dry weather leads to sweeter crops- case in point the beets and turnips in this week’s share. Do yourself a favor and try these salad turnips raw before you decide to cook with them. If you are like us, you’ll just end up eating them like apples!
