Extended Season Week 3

This Week’s Harvest

Farm News

While extended season preparations take up most of our time on the farm these days, we are also starting to transition into our winter work season. This includes evaluating the 2023 season, attending farm conferences as speakers and attendees, planning for the 2024 season with excel charts and seed and equipment ordering, and tying up 2023 office work lose ends.

First up is the seed ordering which involves taking inventory of the supply, talking through any varietal changes we want to make, and having several browser tabs and seed catalogs open as I fill out multiple carts and place the orders. As of now a couple changes we plan to make are discontinuing spaghetti squash and replacing it with delicata. I hope this is exciting for everyone- it is based on feedback I hear so feel free to let me know what you think of certain veggies we grow! We also weren’t super impressed with our Roma tomato variety over the past couple of years and instead of ordering more of it we are looking at a really pretty red and yellow striped variety called Speckled Roman.

I thought I had heard that our absolute favorite sweet corn variety, American Dream, was going to be discontinued this year, so I was thrilled when I saw it in stock on Johnny’s Selected Seeds website this morning! One of the pandemic’s ramifications was record traffic for seed companies and severe seed shortages. We got trained to order our must-haves before the New Year and even then were sometimes too late to get favorite varieties ordered before the dreaded OUT OF STOCK status. Things have seemed to calm down in the seed world, but I am absolutely ordering American Dream right after I post this blog!

  1. Yes on delicata squash! So good! Not a huge fan of tiger spaghetti squash so it sounds like a great swap to me.
