On April 8th we got a treat of a lifetime being in the path of totality for the Great American Solar Eclipse. Back in the summer of 2017 we experienced an 88% partial eclipse which was certainly neat but not anything like the total eclipse. Ben somehow knew how cool it would be, and in 2017 drove the kids 4 hours away to be in the path of totality for a mini mid summer vacation. They went to Mammoth Cave National Park, camped out in a state park, made an eclipse pinhole viewer and found a random small town library that was hosting a viewing party. I guess I didn’t end up getting a full report from that trip because on the morning of April 8th, I had no idea what mind blowing experience was awaiting me.

Fast forward 7 years, this time we had the good fortune of being able to stay put and experience totality, but Ohio is often cloudy or rainy in April and so the weather on eclipse day was definitely a concern! At first it looked like we might be in for clouds but as the day got nearer, the forecast improved and on April 8th the weather couldn’t have been better! Since the rest of the week was rather rainy we feel so lucky! In early April things are still quiet enough on the farm that we didn’t really plan much work on eclipse day and just set out to enjoy ourselves and the last day of the kids’ spring break. We made ourselves a picnic lunch, grabbed our eclipse glasses that we had tucked away since Christmas, loaded the farm truck with pillows, blankets, and lawn chairs and drove out to the middle of our 30 acre farm. And then we just watched and gasped and heard our neighbors cheers and even a few fireworks and recorded our experience. (The Great American Eclipse was a family affair as several of my siblings were in the path of totality as well. My sister’s family was first in Waco, Texas, then came Mile Creek, my mom was next while she visited her sister in Canton, New York, and my brother’s family was last way up in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. )
The total eclipse was simply the most wonderful way to kick off our 18th season farming! And since then, things have really picked up, and we are seeding and planting and prepping fields and busy everyday getting ready to care for and harvest thousands of pounds of organic veggies!
