Farm News

This week will feel like the dog days of summer before summer even officially begins! We are going to brace ourselves for a hot and dry week, start and end our days earlier and try and keep up with watering. If we could simply harvest and deliver vegetables, I would just take the rest of the time off- but we also have to plant the winter squash, harvest the garlic, stake a new round of tomatoes, tie the first round of tomatoes, and start seeding fall brassicas!

Both the seedlings and the cat are very thirsty!
Potatoes get their turn on the sprinkler run. We have 4 fields with produce and each field is 3 or 4 separate runs, so we are watering 24/7 now!

To throw a wrench into everything, the power went out at 1:30 this afternoon and still isn’t back on! This means we had to get the generator going to be able to run our coolers, snake hoses through the yard and into our basement to use the city water to wash since the wells no longer functioned, go without irrigating in the field which is really frustrating ahead of the dry 90s week (no we didn’t get any of the thunderstorms this afternoon!), wash veggies slowly without our rinse conveyor, and guess on the weights of things when our scale batteries died! Right now I am running the computer off my phone hotspot so I can only do computer work until my phone or computer batteries die!

I came in from work the other day and the kids were playing around with an AI drawing app and asked me what we should have it create. I said a tired farmer. The things it came up with so inaccurate! No one was dirty and hair looked perfectly coiffed, not a single strand out of place. The clothes were clean and looked like something you’d wear to the movies and the tired faces looked superficial…not tired to the bone! Needless to say the “farmers” the image generator came up with looked a lot better than I think any of us will once we are through with this week! Because of the heat, the recipes I’m sharing this week are all salads or quite skillet meals! Hopefully you all keep your power!
