It has been a busy and productive week on the farm. In addition to planting the first of several fall crop plantings, we were able to take care of our summer crops. We trellised all 3 plantings of tomatoes and did some much needed weeding. The winter squash field dried out enough for Ben to go through with his tractor mounted rolling cultivators. The field looks pretty clean!

The weeds in some fields got too big to be able to mechanically cultivate so we went through with the weed whacker–a great tool for when the weeds get huge! We also ran organic fertilizer through the drip irrigation to give our crops a boost of nutrients. Pictured below is our system for “fertigation” set up on the sweet potatoes. The bucket holds the solution and the hose sucks it up and it runs through drip lines buried under the plastic mulch where it is delivered to the plant roots through slits in the drip tape every 12 inches. We are very glad we hustled all week long as the inch of rain we got today will keep us out of the fields for a couple days.
