Farm News

It has been a typical mid-season week on the farm: something broke and it is hot! Our delivery truck broke down while we were at market. Ben thought he’d do me a favor and fill it with gas mid way through market and barely made it to the gas station! At first it looked like we’d need to spend a large of change on both the tow, the fix, and a rental vehicle while the truck was in the shop, but the repair was simple and we had our truck back by Tuesday morning!

The truth is that something is nearly always broken on the farm–with a fleet of old tractors and vehicles and lots of moving parts it is inevitable.  Ben spends a lot of time in the shop both with regular maintenance and surprise breakdowns. He didn’t grow up with machinery around him–all his skills are self taught since we started the farm. So far this year alone Ben has had to replace brake lines, a radiator, a head gasket and an alternator! And he could have fixed the market truck himself too, though I am always glad when he recognizes that he is too busy and passes the job on to someone else!
