CSA WEEK 1

This Week’ Harvest

Farm News

Welcome to the 2022 season! Usually we start the CSA the Tuesday after Memorial Day, but several crops weren’t ready yet this year. We may have started a new tradition, though, of having Memorial Day off always! It was really nice to have a longer weekend with enough time to relax before the 24 week CSA season begins. Relax we did (bike rides along the Miami and swimming at Hueston Woods Start Park) but since June 1 we’ve been putting in long days.

Biking on a day off! (what all this water in the river translates to on the farm is that the fields were too wet to be in! Day off for us!)

Memorial Day for the farm has also always meant sweet potato planting time. The organic slips are shipped from a sweet potato farm in South Carolina around Memorial Day so we have to have to have our fields ready so we can plant as soon as possible once they arrive. I am adding potato care to the list of things that need to be done around Memorial Day as we have spent a lot of time in the potato field this week. The crop got hilled (mounding dirt up around the plants to bury the tubers nice and deep), weeded, and fertilized this week.

We are excited to get the CSA season underway and add harvesting into the flow of the work day. So far so good- Monday we had half of us harvest while 2 people planted melons and Ben cultivated. Next week will bring another yummy harvest and another productive week (its time to stake tomatoes, seed another round of cucurbits, plant salad mix, and cultivate onions!)

Truck full of greens for our CSA members
Melons planted and covered, and now, watered.
