Farm News
Yesterday at 5, Ben and I were complaining that all the rainstorms over the weekend had missed us North, South, East and West. We still have a lot of crops that need water. Plus it makes cultivating hard when its too dry and the last couple beds of potatoes we dug were not easy. When it dries out the potato digger brings up large chunks of dirt with the potatoes which then drop on the potatoes effectively burying them again. Conversely, when there’s still a little moisture in the soil, the dirt just fluffs right off, leaving potatoes exposed right on the bed surface for super easy gathering.
At about 5:10 the sky suddenly opened up and it was raining buckets. By 5:30 we realized we had prematurely complained and were so excited to see the rain gauge reading a 1/2 inch of rain. I can’t emphasize enough how good rain feels after a dry spell! The only bad news about the rain (it’s a veggie farm- of course there is bad news! haha) is that it kept us from harvesting carrots for the box this week. Efficiency is the name of the game and so we only harvest carrots with the under cutter and the rain made it too wet to use the implement and drive the tractor in the field. Carrots are also super sensitive to too much water so we’ll have to monitor them closely. There are easily 2 weeks of carrots still out there so the hope is that we have them for another time. Plus you are receiving a pretty loaded box without them!
