We are in the thick of harvest season, as the overflowing CSA boxes would suggest. In addition to the usual weekly CSA and market harvests we do, we are also starting in on some of larger harvests of certain crops that store. We’ve dug 6 of our 24 potato beds and will dole those out throughout the remaining regular CSA season and extended season.
Today we started in our winter squash harvest with the Spaghetti squash crop. We grew it last year for the first time and learned a few things including it needs to get out of the field as soon as we see plant die back and before the squash bugs take over. We are hoping this years’ crop quality is much improved! The fruits are huge! As to how it stores that remains to be seen. Fortunately spaghetti squash is one that doesn’t need to cure after picking, meaning it is ready to eat now so we’ll probably distribute it sooner rather than later. While out picking today I noticed that the honeynuts should probably be picked this week as well! We are also growing butternut squash and acorn squash- back after a couple years off!
Similar to the potatoes, we will dole out these winter squashes throughout the second half of our CSA season. That’s right folks we are halfway through the season! Still plenty busy seeding and planting for those final boxes of the year though. I’m getting ahead of myself thinking about fall food- lets enjoy the summer harvest before it’s gone!
