Farm News
We woke up this morning to a surprising amount of rain. While the farm was indeed dry and in desperate need of rain, anything over 2 inches is definitely overkill! I always say during the dry spells we can at least add water (albeit a lot of work and never quite adequate), but during wet periods it’s not possible to suck it away!
We did install drainage tile in 2017 which was easily our best farm investment. The tile gives the water somewhere to go and directs it out of the fields. The next few days we’ll have our eye on our gorgeous fall brassica block to watch for any disease to show up (most crop diseases thrive in wet humid conditions). We’ll also be monitoring the bed conditions for Ben to be able to continue direct seeding for fall. A lot has already been seeded but now’s about the time for us to seed arugula and radishes and more rounds of spinach and cilantro. The CSA boxes are loaded at the moment, but to keep them full all the way to week 24 and we have to keep seeding and planting now!
The rain also requires some CSA box plan adjustments. I didn’t want us mucking up the never-been-picked kale beds, so we skipped kale this week even though it was in my original plan. On the other hand, we got so much rain that it made another harvest of carrots finally possible. The carrots just pull right out of the saturated soil so we didn’t need the under cutter or broadfork (just lots of time in the packshed to clean them up!).
