Farm News

We are looking forward to having members out next week to update you on the farm in person at our field walk! We are getting through our to do lists as best we can- winning some and losing some! But overall we are very happy with how the crops and fields are looking.

Nicely cultivated melon patch- nary a weed in sight
On the other hand, in another field, juuuuust a few grass weeds have been allowed to flourish in between cucumber beds!

Last week’s major project was harvesting the onions and we enlisted the kids help over the weekend to help wrap it up! After thinking our onions wouldn’t size up because of the drought, we got a much needed rainfall at the right time. Looking at the final product you would never think it was suffering. The onions harvest process involves pulling the onions and allowing them to field dry for a day or two weather permitting. This helps dry the green tops down quickly. Then we gather them in bulk bins and bring to the barn to finish the curing process on chicken wire rack tables.

3 of 11 bins total!

With that major task complete- a four day project start to finish- we are going to focus on planting this week. We have the final planting of sweet corn to plant, the fall brassicas- think brussel sprouts, collard greens, cauilfower and more!- and a few other odds and ends.

Beds ready for seedlings!

Recipes

Minestrone Soup with Basil Pesto (if you have kohlrabi, fennel, or any other veggie lingering in your fridge add it to the soup!)

Cucumber Lime Vodka Coolers (mixing it up a bit since you’ve gotten a lot of cucumbers!)

Greek Cucumber Salad (use sweet onion in place of red)

Coming Up Next Week (our best guess….) Green Beans, Cantaloupe, Salad Mix, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Tomatoes, Sungolds, Onions, Cabbage, Carrots, Bell Peppers
