CSA Week 3

This Week’s Harvest

Farm News

This box marks the transition period between spring and summer crops. It has the last head lettuce and arugula until fall but includes the first of our warm weather cucurbit crop- zucchini and cucumbers. In the nearby future we’ll add peppers, eggplant, sweet onions and green beans to the harvest list while the brassica crops (the cooking greens, kohlrabi, radishes (it’s a big family)) will fall off leaving only kale and cabbage to fill summer boxes.

We haven’t been so lucky with rain this week so the irrigation is going 24/7. Plants being thirsty isn’t the only worry when it gets dry. It can become too hard to do things like cultivate (weed) when moisture is totally gone. We are hoping to harvest all of our garlic this week. We can’t just pull the bulbs out of the ground- there is too much resistance so we have to undercut the bed with a bar that runs behind the tractor, gets dropped down into the soil, and lifts the soil and the plant so they can be harvested. We are a little worried about it being too try for the under cutter to get deep enough to lift the garlic without cutting it. We’ll find out on Thursday-the day we’ve slated for a big garlic harvest!
