CSA Week 7

This Week’s Harvest

SAVE THE DATE!

Our annual CSA member field walk will be Tuesday August 6th from 7 to 8:30 . The rain date will be Wednesday the 7th 7 to 8:30 and we’ll keep you posted via email about any changes. We love having CSA members out the farm to see where their produce is grown and packed. We’ll check out the crops we are harvesting and see what’s still to come and answer any of your questions! Bring the whole family or friends you’ve shared your produce with. Wear shoes that can get dirty and are comfortable (strollers aren’t really navigable around the farm). Hope to see you there!

Farm News

The weather gods worked in our favor last week and it didn’t rain too much to interfere with everything we had going on- namely making beds for our fall crops and bringing in the onions. We pulled the onions on Thursday into crates that we left out in the field for 24 hours to expedite the drying out process. Then on Friday we brought the crates in and started the process of unloading onto our home made onion drying tables. These are simple wooden framed tables with chicken wire tops that can stack and have a lot of air flow. They are perfect because they don’t take up a lot of space and allow for the onions to really dry out which is necessary for successful long term storage. On Saturday Ben and I just had a little bit left to unload to be able to call that project done. For now. In a couple weeks, after they are thoroughly dried out, we will move the onions from the table tops into bulk bins and put into our large trailer cooler for their long term storage. All in all we pulled about 15,000 onions off of eight 300 foot beds!

First step is pulling all the onions. This took all morning.
The next day we gathered the onions into crates and brought wagon loads of crates in from the field
In the background you can see the stacked chicken wire tables. In the foreground are onion crates waiting to be arranged on the tables. You can see the green tops are starting to dry down (especially when you compare to the tops of the just pulled onions in the 1st pic ) and in a couple weeks they will be totally shriveled up and dried out at which point we can move the onions into bulk bins for long term storage.
