CSA Week 6

This Week’s Harvest

Farm News

We are glad to be out of the dry period we had for much of June. It was becoming impossible to get fields ready for our fall plantings…..but now we are getting a little too much rain! I am reminded of a time I was called a “chronic weather complainer”. And it’s true! I’m never satisfied. The problem this time is that Ben was getting a field ready for our fall brassicas on Sunday and was up to the bed making part when the storm came out of nowhere and hit fast! So we didn’t get those beds ready and with more rain forecasted the first part of the week we will probably have to wait until next week. We also have to get our onions out of the field this week and it’s best if we can harvest them dry and set them out to further dry and then bring them in. So basically a 48-72 hour dry forecast is ideal for onion harvest. Everything will get done- we’ll just need to play a little catch up by the time it does dry out! And I really shouldn’t be complaining about the weather when farms in Vermont are dealing with historic flooding 2 years in a row and farms in the upper midwest have been dealing with wet weather all season. So this isn’t a complaining post- rather an explanation post of the ins and outs of managing a farm when what we do and when we do it can be planned to some degree but is ultimately dictated by the weather! Very rarely does it all work out perfectly and today we’ll just be grateful we can at least take a break from irrigating and have plenty of food to harvest!

Before Sunday’s storm, Ben was using our new perfecta to get this field ready for beds. He finished the tilling but got rained out before the beds could be made
Collards, brussels sprouts, fennel and celery will be planted as soon as beds are ready for them!
